Topic: The Joys and Sorrow of Laundry.

In real life I confess that I absolutely hate laundry: washing, drying and particularly ironing. But in art and literature and landscapes it fascinates me. We will play with all manner of images and texts: a sublime wedding poem by Philip Larkin; the obnoxious Mr. Toad's humiliation as a washerwoman in The Wind in the Willows; Neruda's "Ode to Ironing"; Degas' deeply moving portraits of women ironing; French wash-houses by streams and rivers; the origins of the word "gossip" and much, much more. A simple crisply ironed white tablecloth will never look the same to you again, I promise.
