Christenberry who died last week was known as a photographer. He was raised on the South and was drawn to the changes, the demise of the scenery he had grown up with. Shuttered shops, decrepit barns, old metal signs. I think what really intrigued me when looking at his work on line was how much else he did. He painted, he built little models of the buildings he photographed and interestingly started making small Klu Klux Klan figurines. In an interview with Terry Gross he said that as a kid he had dared to go to a meeting of the Klan and was so frightened by the Klansman guarding the door that he turned and ran. It made a huge impression on him. He continued to add to his collection of figures throughout his life.
