In these luscious paintings Wiley subtly examines gender, race…and something about African Americans as seen through a Baroque, European lense. And…boy can he paint! Skin so shiny…with wall paper that can’t stay behind the sitter but entwines and surrounds him/her. Wiley choses subjects off the street and has them choose a European painting for a pose…giving the sitter a sense that they have some control over how they’re depicted. These are Glorious!!!!
