Baumgartner creates enormous monochrome woodcuts taken from her own video stills. Speed and the passage of time is her subject. The contrast between ‘video’ and ‘woodcut’ is vast. Taking an image from a video and translating that into a woodcut…one that may be 10 feet wide…seems a daunting task. As to the subjects within those woodcuts…I’m not sure. A wave, a helicopter, some windmills, an explosion, a beach, a group of WWII fighter jets…? The work seems to be more about the endeavor than the product. The fighter jet print is 14 feet long!!! Quite an endeavor! Her work is on display now at the MFA in Boston.
