The first show I saw of Davis’s work was at the Corcoran in Washington on one of our whirlwind museum trips. We would drive down from NH for 3 or 4 days and cover as much territory as possible with good friends. Davis’s work was just glorious! Huge paintings with such color! I dunno about content…but wow the colors he put together! In the gallery there were these big strips of color. You could take the strips, which were magnetized I think, and stick them on the wall next to each other…making a Gene Davis was harder than you think…even with the help of great jazz playing in the background!!! (TIP: The last image is one I showed yesterday. It’s from Daily Overview…tulip fields. Gene Davis would have loved this!
