Erasure Collage with Jocelyn Winn - Spring 2
This generative one-day workshop explores the process of erasure, a type of poetic response to existing material that intentionally removes or obscures the work to create a new perspective. The workshop also focuses on assemblage as a means of showcasing these responses.
Students experiment with white-out, redaction, painting over, highlighting, or cutting words and visuals to recontextualize, challenge, or subvert any number of concepts and themes - from memory and cultural norms to philosophy and the environment. A paragraph of text can be whited-out to reveal a found poem and paired with an iconic print smudged with charcoal to create a different image. The possibilities are endless!
Students will practice collage techniques along with fun word play, sourcing from magazines, book pages, photographs, and archival or found ephemera. Additional materials will be provided for students to complement their montages with color, texture, and mixed media. Students can expect to leave each class with a new work.
This class is for all artists who enjoy tactile and experimental forms that layer meaning and material.
