Hand Building - Fall 2026
Students will explore ceramic art through a hands-on introduction to a variety of handbuilding techniques, including pinching, coiling, and slab construction. The class encourages experimentation and discovery, allowing students to develop an understanding of how clay behaves while learning to translate ideas into three-dimensional form without the use of the potter’s wheel. Through guided demonstrations and individual support, students will build confidence in forming, joining, and refining their work.
While students have the freedom to create expressive and imaginative pieces, instruction also emphasizes the design and construction of functional objects such as vases, cups, bowls, and sculptural vessels. Along the way, students will engage with aesthetic, technical, and conceptual questions—considering form, surface, texture, and intention—as they develop their own creative voice. A wide range of tools, textures, and decorative materials will be available to support exploration, including methods for adding surface pattern and finishing details.
Handbuilding is the oldest method of working with clay, offering a direct and tactile connection to the material and a slower, thoughtful approach to making. Students will have access to open studio hours to practice techniques, continue projects, and deepen their skills outside of class time. No prior experience is necessary, and students are not required to purchase their own tools, everything needed will be provided. One 25 lb bag of clay is included and more is available for purchase within the studio
