Ages: Attendee must be between 13 and 17 years of age
Location: Ceramics Studio - CH Basement

Get creative with clay in this fun, hands-on class designed specifically for teens! Over four weeks, students will learn the basics of handbuilding while creating their own unique ceramic pieces.

Students will explore a variety of handbuilding techniques, including pinch pots, coil and slab building, texturing, and surface decoration. Each week will introduce new techniques and encourage students to experiment, problem-solve, and develop their own creative ideas. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas and creative goals to the class, while also being ready to learn new building techniques, follow demonstrations, and work through the steps of creating with clay. No previous clay experience is necessary! Whether you’re completely new to ceramics or have worked with clay before, this class offers a welcoming space to learn, experiment, and have fun with the possibilities of clay. Students should come prepared to get their hands dirty, try new things, and explore their own creative ideas. One 25 lb bag of clay is included and more is available for purchase within the studio. No independent open studio hours will be included for this class, as all students must be accompanied by an instructor in the studio. All work must be completed during class time.

See the planned schedule below:

Day 1: Introduction to Clay: Students will be introduced to the basics of working with clay and learn about the handbuilding process. We will practice making pinch pots and coils, and experiment with different building techniques. Students will have time to experiment with the material and start developing ideas for their projects.

Day 2: Experimenting with Slabs and Making Mugs: Students will learn the fundamentals of slab construction and use these techniques to create their own mug. We will explore how to build a sturdy form, attach pieces of clay securely, create handles, and add personal details and textures.

Day 3: Independent studio day: Students will have this time to work independently on their projects, employing the techniques learned in the previous classes.

Day 4: Surface Design: Once the forms are built, students will explore ways to personalize their work through surface design. We will experiment with texture, carving, and mark-making using a variety of tools, as well as learn how to apply underglazes to add color and visual interest to the finished pieces.

Day 5: Wrapping It Up: The final class will be dedicated to completing any unfinished projects and making sure finished work is ready to be fired. Students will review their pieces, make any final additions or adjustments, and record their preferred glaze colors. Each student will select up to three artworks to keep.

Finished Work Pickup: A date for students to pick up their finished ceramic work will be scheduled after the firing process is complete. Students and families will be notified when work is ready for pickup via email.
