Erasure Collage

Date:
Thursday • January 21 | 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Ages: Attendee must be older than 18 years old

Lunch: 12:00-1:00pm | Presentation: 1:00-2:30pm

This generative workshop explores the process of erasure, a type of poetic response to existing material that intentionally removes or obscures the work to create a new perspective. The workshop also focuses on assemblage as a means of showcasing these responses.

Participants experiment with white-out, redaction, painting over, highlighting, or cutting words and visuals to recontextualize, challenge, or subvert any number of concepts and themes—from memory and cultural norms to

philosophy and the environment. A paragraph of text can be whited-out to reveal a found poem and paired with an iconic print smudged with charcoal to create a different image. The possibilities are endless!

Participants will practice collage techniques along with fun word play, sourcing from magazines, book pages, photographs, and archival or found ephemera. Additional materials will be provided for students to complement their montages with color, texture, and mixed media.

This workshop will be led by Jocelyn Winn, a professional editor and writer as well as the founder of The Eleventh Letter Writing Gallery at 146 North Main Street, Concord, NH. She is the 2025–2026 writer-in-residence for the Blossom Yoga & Wellness Costa Rica retreats, a NH Book Festival moderator, and the nonfiction editor for The Maine Review. She holds a BS in rhetorical theory/speech communication from Emerson College and an MFA in fiction and nonfiction from Vermont College of Fine Arts.
