TORNILLO ART PROJECT
The Artwork in “Uncaged Art” is the result of a four-day social studies project in December 2018 and January 2019. Two social studies teachers instructed their students to create art about their homelands, the architecture, and their culture. It was a way, they said, to instill pride. Using basic supplies (construction paper, Popsicle sticks, glue, paint, boxes, yarn, and pipe cleaners), students recreated colorful memories of their homelands that are beautiful and poignant. At the end of the project, students had produced over 400 pieces of artwork, some as individual artists and others are teams. There was no formal art training, although one talented youth provided instruction to his peers. The varied pieces in “Uncaged Art” demonstrate the talent and resilience of youth who had traveled thousands of miles to seek a new life.
