Hand Building with guest artist Andy Hampton

Ages: Attendee must be older than 16 years old
Location: Ceramics Studio

Andy is a master craftsman, potter, and sculptor. He is dedicated to creating beautiful pottery for people to use and enjoy. He studied his craft as an apprentice of master potter Richard Bennett of the Great Barrington Pottery in Housatonic, Ma.. During his apprenticeship, he learned about Japanese aesthetics, production, and firing techniques. Since that time, Andy has continued to refine and evolve this classic tradition of shape and simplicity in his work. Andy was juried into the League of NH Craftsmen in 1998, having met the League's rigorous standards for self-expression, vision, and quality craftsmanship. He is also involved with the NH Potters Guild.

In this one-day workshop, students will explore creative ways to build with both clay extrusions and slabs. Participants will learn a variety of cutting, forming, and attachment techniques to construct dynamic forms—from simple functional vases to more complex and expressive sculptural pieces. Demonstrations and individual guidance will help students develop confidence in working with clay’s structural and textural possibilities.

The workshop will run from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with an hour lunch break midday. This class is open to all adults, and while a little clay experience is helpful, it is not required—curiosity and a willingness to experiment are all you need!
All materials and firings are included.
