Intermediate/Advanced Throwing with Marcia
Students enrolling in this class should have a comfortable understanding of wheel throwing and be able to work toward desired shapes and sizes with increasing consistency. Participants are expected to use studio tools and equipment safely and independently, and to approach their work with curiosity and a willingness to refine their process.
Throughout the course, students deepen their understanding of balance and proportion, refine wall thickness, and explore a range of surface decoration techniques to enhance both form and meaning. While there is freedom to pursue individual ideas and creative expression, the class also emphasizes the thoughtful design and execution of functional work- such as vases, platters, and teapots- where craftsmanship and usability are carefully considered. Advanced aesthetic, technical, and conceptual challenges are introduced to encourage critical thinking and intentional making.
This class is intended for next-level intermediate students who are already comfortable throwing on the wheel and have completed prior coursework with our instructors or another learning institution. Building on foundational skills, students review key elements of functional pottery while expanding into more detailed and complex forms. Instruction includes demonstrations and guided practice in techniques such as making lids, constructing teapots, throwing closed forms, and developing cohesive sets or series. The course encourages experimentation, problem-solving, and pushing personal boundaries as students continue to grow technically and artistically. Students are not required to purchase their own tools, everything needed will be provided. One 25 lb bag of clay is included and more is available for purchase within the studio.
