Intermediate Wheel Throwing with Sam

Date:
Thursdays • April 2 - June 4 | 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Ages: Attendee must be older than 16 years old
Location: Ceramics Studio

In this Intermediate class, students review and strengthen foundational wheel-throwing skills—including centering, opening, and pulling clay—while becoming more confident using studio tools and equipment. Building on these basics, students explore a wider range of throwing techniques and are encouraged to deepen their artistic voice through creative problem-solving and experimentation.

An intermediate student is someone who understands and can independently complete the fundamentals of throwing on the wheel, such as centering, pulling, and forming basic shapes. This class provides an opportunity to expand technical knowledge, refine craftsmanship, and develop greater control over form. It is intended for students who are already familiar with wheel throwing, whether through previous classes with our instructors or at another institution.

Students continue their exploration of ceramic art by practicing more advanced wheel-throwing techniques, with an emphasis on designing and creating well-crafted utilitarian work. Topics include balance and proportion, refining wall thickness, improving consistency, and exploring surface decoration methods. While students have the freedom to pursue creative ideas, they also focus on making thoughtful functional pieces—such as vases, platters, and teapots—that integrate both form and function. The course also introduces more advanced aesthetic, technical, and conceptual considerations, encouraging students to think critically about their work and process as they grow as makers. Students are not required to purchase their own tools, everything needed will be provided. One 25 lb bag of clay is included and more is available for purchase within the studio.
