Intro to Block Printing (ages 10-14) with Meagan Doffing - Spring 1
This 5-week Introduction to Block Printing class teaches the fundamentals of relief printmaking, where participants design, carve, and print their own stamps. Designed for beginners, this class covers transferring designs, using carving tools, applying ink with a brayer, and printing on paper or fabric (totes/cards). Students will finish the class with their own reusable block and several finished prints.
Students will learn to transfer custom or provided simple designs onto the base material of soft-cut rubber or linoleum, then carve them to create a raised surface for printing. Your instructor will cover how to roll ink, create even coverage, and apply pressure using a brayer, baren, or by hand for crisp, high-contrast results. Advanced students will experiment beyond single-color printing to explore registering multiple colors or blocks for more complex designs.
This traditional art form can be used for functional designs like greeting cards, or for fine art.
NOTE: Participants acknowledge that carving involves use of sharp tools, and safety will be covered by teacher.
