Finding Narrative for Artists with Jocelyn Winn - Spring 1
This generative, cross-discipline 5-week class for visual artists and writers alike mines the elements of narrative - such as setting, sensorial details, plot, characterization, conflict, dramatic tension, and theme - to capture the essence of story, both pictorially and in written form. Students discover how the art of writing can inspire the visual arts, and vice versa, melding the two forms.
Through hands-on drawing/sketching practices and the writing of short stories, essays, and/or poems, students will experiment with the process of finding a narrative. Students will create from and respond to still life, photography, paintings, writing prompts, books, Kimball Jenkins exhibition artwork, and indoor and outdoor settings. Students can expect to leave this class with complete written and sketched narratives, a notebook filled with go-to ideas for future work, and the opportunity to combine and collaborate between art forms. We’ll also have time to share our experiences and “read” our work.
This class is for anyone who wants to dive deeper into the types of stories, messages, and themes they want their artwork to tell and show.
