Mixed Media Portraits: Identity in Layers (ages 12-16) with Kelsey Stap - Spring 1
Identity in Layers: Mixed Media Portrait is a creative, skill-building art class designed for students in grades 7–10 who are interested experimenting with mixed media and learning how to create a realistic portrait. This class encourages students to explore portraiture in a supportive and engaging environment while developing both technical skills and personal expression.
Throughout the class, students will create a layered mixed media background using collage and various acrylic paint techniques. Students will explore abstraction as a way to express mood, personality, and individual interests, emphasizing experimentation and creative risk-taking rather than perfection.
Once the background is complete, students will learn how to use the grid drawing technique to draw a realistically proportioned portrait. By breaking the image into smaller, manageable sections, the grid method helps make portrait drawing more accessible and less intimidating, allowing students to focus on observation, proportion, and accuracy. The portrait will serve as the focal point of the artwork, creating a strong contrast between realism and the expressive mixed media background.
The instructor will guide students through each step of the process with demonstrations, clear instructions, and individual feedback. Students will learn how to thoughtfully integrate their portrait with the background so the final piece feels intentional and cohesive.
This continuing class is well suited for students who enjoy drawing, want to improve their portrait skills, or are curious about combining realism with abstract and mixed media techniques. Mixed Media Portraits offers a structured yet flexible approach that builds confidence, encourages creativity, and helps students develop a strong, finished artwork they can be proud of.
